![]() Shoebill storks release loud shrieks, sounding like a machine gun, to attract a mate. They can be very loud when they wantĪlthough they can be silent predators, they are vocal and loud when it comes to mating rituals. And shoebill storks are great at this! 9. To successfully ambush prey, they also have to remain silent while waiting for the right moment of attack. They will stand or sit in their hiding places for hours, waiting for prey – making sure to keep perfectly still to blend in with the darkness. They are patient and silentĪnother reason shoebill storks are excellent predators is that they are extremely patient. However, sometimes they even kill their siblings. ![]() This fighting starts at the age of 2 months and the winning bird usually forces the other to flee and live on their own. Young shoebills born in the same nest will fight each other to compete for their mother’s attention. Their aggressive and territorial behavior is evident even from a young age. Their reinforced beak and skull are like shock absorbers during the thrusts. They will thrust out their beaks at great speed to surprise, decapitate, and capture their prey. These birds are ambush predators that mostly hunt at night. However, the shoebill stork is aggressive and known to attack and fight Nile crocodiles, especially if they are disturbed. Living in marshes and swamps can be difficult, with limited food supplies and plenty of predators. However, shoebill storks are actually closer related to pelicans. This habit has initially made scientists believe they were within the true stork family since all true storks use their own poop to cool off. Their poop has a lot of liquids and once the liquid evaporates from their legs, it helps cool them down. Shoebills practice the habit of pooping on their legs to help lower their body temperature – known as urohydrosis. They will fly with their neck and head folded backward to help them maintain longer flights with increased aerodynamics. These birds use their wings to intimidate predators, fly, and help keep their balance since they can lose balance easily when standing. However, when they fly, they have one of the slowest flaps of any bird, going at a pace of 150 flaps per minute. The shoebill stork’s wings can expand up to 7.64 feet, while the bird’s average height is around 3.3. The shape and size of their beaks give them an almost dinosaur-like appearance. ![]() Their large beaks curve down at the end, forming a hook, and they use this sharp curve to pierce through their prey’s bodies. The shoebill stork gets their name from their shoe-shaped beak that can reach up to 7.4 or 9.4 inches long and 4 inches wide. Shoebills can stay alive to see seven generations easily. The average lifespan of a shoebill stork ranges from 35 to 50 years, which is a long time, especially for birds. This increases the shoebill’s chances of capturing its prey, especially since lungfish are one of their favorite meals. They prefer habitats with poorly oxygenated water because the fishes tend to surface for air frequently. You can find shoebill storks in East Africa, especially in marshes and freshwater swamps of counties like Uganda, Zambia, Sudan, Kenya, and Tanzania. Mount the computer on the handlebars how you want. I snipped the cable ties down to leave 1cm spare to pull on with pliers should it work loose, which is unlikely, but you never know. Once you've done this successfully, you will hear a nice quiet 'tick' when the magnet passes the sensor as you spin the wheel. Don't forget that realistically you need to keep the sensor and computer less than about 50cm apart for it to pick up the signal! This is VERY important! It's a case of tweaking to move the arm of the sensor round and the magnet up and down to get the best path. The trick here is get the magnet to glide past the sensor zone (marked on the sensor) with a gap of 5mm or less between the two. You basically cable tie the sensor to the fork (don't do it too tight at first) then slide the magnet onto the spoke. I mounted mine on the right hand side of my fork (opposite to the disc brake) and about halfway up. I would suggest fitting the sensor first. ![]() This is perhaps the clearest of the instructions in the manual. Therefore, I've ignored the '2 bikes' options. There is an option to use this computer on two bikes and save two sets of data. ![]() This seems to be a very common complaint and having sat down for a while and done a bit of research on the net, I can now write out some instructions to hopefully save some people a bit of time!!! So - I got a new wireless computer for my bike today - a CatEye MICRO Wireless Cycle Computer (CC-MC100W) - and the instructions are, quite frankly, crap. For some reason CCC appears to still work and now displays the more modern driver version. Windows automatically went through another prolonged detection cycle and returned to the original, Microsoft-supplied driver. These are 0 with overscan fully off (to the right in the GUI) and increase by one for each increment of the slider to the left.įinally, I again uninstalled the display adapter driver from Device Manager (including deleting the driver). Process Monitor does not show the full data but a bit of experimentation and zooming in with RegEdit showed that the relevant bytes are in both DALR6 and GDOADJR6 - in the former at byte 37 (offset 0x24) and in the latter at byte 21 (offset 0x14). I believe the prefixes are the same paths resolved by the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video mentioned by steffen and others. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\video\0000\DAL_DFPOptions SUCCESS Type: REG_BINARY, Length: 4, Data: 18 00 00 00 I can't personally test this solution, but it appears that it worked for people on fairly recent drivers, so give it a shot: go to Tom's Hardware or I'll just re-post it here: I found a fix for the overscan issue I don't know what the equivalent is on Windows, or if you can even read/write the settings without using Catalyst. There is a way to directly tweak the underscan/overscan on Linux by modifying values in the "PCSDB" (Persistent Configuration Store Database). It also seems to be a fairly unique decision among graphics driver developers, as I can't reproduce the weirdness on a number of other non-AMD devices: Android tablets, Nvidia cards, and Intel on-chip graphics. ![]() I don't agree with the policy, but that's the way it is. So they are sticking to their guns on underscanning by default on HDMI to ensure that nobody gets stuck with a desktop that's too big for their screen (with UI elements hanging "off the screen"). The argument is that if the desktop is too large, then the user can't see where the Catalyst icon is or the start menu, and they therefore can't navigate the UI in order to make the appropriate change. The basic idea is that AMD would rather underscan some people whose HDMI displays don't overscan, and create too small of a picture (blank spaces around the picture), rather than not underscan and cause people whose displays always overscan (with no setting to change it and incorrect EDID information) to have the desktop display too large. I've had extensive discussion about the overscan/underscan dilemma with AMD developers who work on the Catalyst drivers. ![]() This process is known as secondary electron emission. Whichever species (ions or atoms) strike the cathode, collisions within the cathode redistribute this energy resulting in electrons ejected from the cathode. These neutral atoms then strike the cathode. Ions strike the more numerous neutral gas atoms, transferring a portion of their energy to them. The primary mechanism, however, is less direct. This happens partially through the ions striking the cathode directly. Some of the ions' kinetic energy is transferred to the cathode. As long as the potential is maintained, a population of ions and electrons remains. The initial population of ions and electrons collides with other atoms, exciting or ionizing them. The positive ions are driven towards the cathode by the electric potential, and the electrons are driven towards the anode by the same potential. A small fraction of the population of atoms within the cell is initially ionized through random processes, such as thermal collisions between atoms or by gamma rays. An electric potential of several hundred volts is applied between the two electrodes. The cell is typically filled with neon, but other gases can also be used. A low pressure is used to increase the mean free path for a fixed electric field, a longer mean free path allows a charged particle to gain more energy before colliding with another particle. ![]() In its simplest form, it consists of two electrodes in a cell held at low pressure (0.1–10 torr about 1/10000th to 1/100th of atmospheric pressure). The simplest type of glow discharge is a direct-current glow discharge. If the current is increased still further, other factors come into play and an arc discharge begins. When the current is increased above the level where the entire cathode surface is involved, the discharge is known as an abnormal glow. As the current is increased, more of the cathode surface is involved in the glow. The glow discharge starts as a normal glow. When a glow discharge develops, the electric field is considerably modified by the presence of positive ions the field is concentrated near the cathode. When the electric field increases enough to cause ionization, the Townsend discharge starts. īelow the breakdown voltage there is little to no glow and the electric field is uniform. In an arc discharge, electrons leave the cathode by thermionic emission and field emission, and the gas is ionized by thermal means. For example, the average electron may cause dozens of ionizing collisions via the Townsend avalanche the resulting positive ions head toward the cathode, and a fraction of those that cause collisions with the cathode will dislodge an electron by secondary emission. In a glow discharge, the carrier generation process reaches a point where the average electron leaving the cathode allows another electron to leave the cathode. ![]() At higher voltages across the anode and cathode, the freed carriers can gain enough energy so that additional carriers are freed during collisions the process is a Townsend avalanche or multiplication.
